Bronte Bogey Hole
Visiting Bronte Bogey Hole
Bronte Bogey Hole is a really cool spot to go for a swim at the southern end of Bronte Beach. It’s’s a natural swimming spot that was enhanced in the early 1900s to make it a more protected spot for swimming. A ring of rocks form the edge on the seaward side of the pool, providing a buffer for any waves headed toward the shore. Bronte Beach can sometime produce some brutal shore-dumpers that make swimming at the beach difficult for those unfamiliar or not confident in the surf, making the Bronte Bogey Hole a safer place for children and weaker swimmers.
Why Bronte Bogey Hole is a great place to swim
You can still feel like you’re in the ocean while swimming in calmer waters. I visited the Bronte Bogey Hole by default, as the day I had pencilled in to visit the famous Bronte Baths, they were closed for cleaning. As a result, I think the Bogey Hole was much busier that day than it otherwise would have been.
When I was there, it was just after low tide. I had to wade out quite a distance before it was deep enough to swim properly. A sandy bottom all the way out to the rocky edge.
Don't forget to pack your snorkel
Luckily I had my snorkel in the car, and had a great time exploring the sea life around the rocky edge.
I’m not really any good at identifying fish species, but I saw heaps of different types, and lots of big ones. There was one flathead that was enormous!
The depth and conditions would vary depending on the tide, swell and the shifting sands of the bottom.
There are no dogs allowed on Bronte Beach, but the promenade is popular for dog walkers. The day I was there, heaps of people tied their dogs up to the fence while they went for a quick dip.
What is the water temperature like?
On a day in late May that was quite chilly in the air, Digby Duck reported that the water temperature was 18.8 degrees. It felt pretty warm and I stayed in for a while.

Pretty excited to report that the small changerooms at the southern end of Bronte Beach have hot showers! Conveniently located between the beach and Bronte Baths, the ladies has 3 showers inside. The changeroom is quite small, but there’s hooks to hang your gear.
There’s lots of benches outside the changeroom to sit or put your stuff on if you get changed under your towel. There’s cold showers at the southern end of the building.

There’s no dogs allowed on Bronte Beach or in the Bronte Bogey hole, but the day I was there, there were heaps of people taking their dogs for a walk along the promenade, and lots who tied their dogs up to the railing while they went for a quick swim in the Bogey Hole. I’m a dog owner, and I’m not against this, but if your dog is going to bark the whole time you’re in the water, maybe consider a separate outing leaving Fido at home while you swim.
