How to get to Bulgo Rock Pool

Whenever we were presented with a choice while making our way down the trail, we chose the left fork. In some instances this was because there was a sign saying the beach was in that direction, the other times, we just took a punt.

How big is Bulgo Pool?

The pool itself is about 25m by 5m and only chest deep at it’s deepest. Certainly not much good for swimming laps, but lovely for a cool off and a snorkel.

Make sure to pack your snorkel

Snorkelling in this pool is a delight, with plenty of little fish to see, and a picturesque rocky bottom. Surrounding the pool is a big flat rocky platform. If you look north up the coast towards the Royal National Park, with the light like today, it certainly has a bit of a Jurassic Park feel to it.

What is the water temperature?

Poor Digory the duck got left at home for this one, so I’m going to guess the water temperature was around 21 degrees the day we visited.

What other ocean pools are near Bulgo Rock Pool?

Only 23kms to the north is the famous Wattamolla Falls in The Royal National Park. Or you can fit in a quick visit to Coalcliff Rock Pool, situated a short 6.7 km drive to the south.

Our experience visiting Bulgo Pool

It ended being quite hot by the time we reached the rock pool at the southern end of Bulgo Beach. I climbed the small hill to try and get a shot of the pool, and got my shoes covered in mud. On returning to the beach I walked through shallow salt water to get the mud off my shoes, and a giant leech came off as well!

Definitely scenic and a lovely spot for a swim. I don’t imagine it would ever get too crowded, but to tell you the truth, I won’t be hurrying back to this one. Something about this place is not welcoming.

Or the fact that it was so hot we needed a swim by the time we walked back up to the car. Or maybe it was just the leeches…
