Visiting Cairns Ocean Pool
Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is located on the foreshore overlooking the coast on the eastern side of the city. Featuring a magnificent main pool, which has a beach section with sand and gradual entry to it’s deepest point of 1.5m. On a high tide this is quite a spectacular infinity pool type photo opportunity.
What do the famous fish sculptures represent?
The iconic Woven Fish sculptures sitting atop their sturdy mounting poles who reflect the Torres Straight Islander heritage of artist Brian Robinson.
The fish represent the Torres Straight tradition of weaving leaves into the shape of a fish. The sculptures have become synonymous with Cairns’ identity.

Is Cairns Lagoon Accessible?
There’s wheelchair access at the southern end and an aquatic wheelchair available. The southern end is also home to some more artwork, this time sculpted and polished granite by Hew Chee Fong and Loretta Noonan. The Herd are meant to be interactive, so be sure to let the kids explore them by close inspection and touch.
This artwork starts on the path and leads into the paddling pool entry for the littlies, where there are a few small water fountains guaranteeing a good time to be had by all. For the bigger kids there is a bigger fountain out near the woven fish as well.

This beautiful pool is saltwater. It provides a safe swimming environment for everyone.
How old is the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon?
Officially opening in 2003 the lagoon has become a major drawcard for the city of Cairns, with tourists travelling from far away to experience this beautiful pool.

Free entry
When is Cairns Esplanade pool open?
From 6am to 9pm every day except Wednesday when it doesn’t open til 12pm. (Closed Wednesday mornings for cleaning).
Are Lifeguards on duty at Cairns ocean pool?
Lifeguards are on duty during opening hours. A very safe swimming environment.
Are there lockers available?
Yes there are lockers available for hire near the southern carpark.

Is there Car Parking near Cairns pool?
South Esplanade Car Park located in Pier Point Road, or metered parking available on nearby streets
Are there BBQ Facilities near Cairns saltwater pool?
Electric BBQ facilities located throughout the Esplanade vicinity with sheltered picnic tables and chairs. Each BBQ is named (mostly after birds) so you can tell your friend which one to meet you at.

Is Cairns Esplanade Lagoon Pool Wheelchair and Pram accessible?
The pool is wheelchair accessible at the southern end. Toilet and changeroom accessible. Separate accessible toilet. Aquatic wheelchair available-ask the lifeguards for details.

What are the changeroom and shower facilities like at Cairns Esplanade Lagoon?
Hot showers available in changerooms that offer plenty of space to get changed. Hooks to hang your gear while you get changed. Lockers available.
