Where are the Soldiers Baths?
The Soldiers Baths are located at the south end of the famous Nobby’s Beach at Newcastle. A two hour and 20 minute drive north of Sydney, this tidal rock pool is at the northen end of Bathers Way Walk.
The walk is 6kms along the coast of Newcastle featuring a bunch of ocean pools. North to south they are: Soldiers Baths, Newcastle Ocean Baths, The Canoe Pool, The Bogey Hole and Merewether ocean Baths.
Why Soldiers Baths rock pool is a great place to swim
Natural rock pool anyone? The Soldiers Baths look like a naturally occurring rock formation, but is actually a man made pool.
At low tide the rocks peek above the water surface providing a sheltered swimming spot for the little ones, or swimmers who are not confident in the waves.
Packing a snorkel is essential
I haven’t swum here yet, but based on appearances alone, the Soldier’s baths remind me of Bronte Bogey Hole (not to be confused with Newcastle’s own Bogey Hole, just down the road, or Mollymook Bogey Hole on the south coast of NSW.
The position in relation to the beach, and appearance of the rocky perimeter are both stark reminders of Bronte Bogey hole.
Bronte Bogey Hole had as many fish near the rocky edge as anywhere I am yet to snorkel on this ocean pool mission. Pack your snorkel or goggles and wonder at the beautiful sea life below the surface. It’s like the best meditation session ever!
Can you swim at the beach at Nobby's?
If you are a competent swimmer, you can swim at Nobby’s Beach. I haven’t been there yet, but it looks as though lifeguards patrol the beach all year round. You can check the schedule here.
If the waves aren’t your go, you can definitely swim at the Soldier’s Baths or Newcastle Baths just down the road.
What is the water temperature like?
Haven’t been there yet, but will be sure to pack Dante the Duck and report back.

What are the changeroom and shower facilities like at Soldiers Baths Rock Pool?
I don’t think there are changing facilities at Soldiers baths, but showers and toilets at Nobby’s surf life saving Club right next door.
Can I take my dog to Soldiers Baths Pool?
Nobby’s Beach is listed as dog friendly, but usually dogs are not allowed on rock platforms to protect birds nesting. Will update when I visit.
