Where is Wombarra's Ocean Pool?

Wombarra Rock Pool is the bomb! Featuring in our Ultimate Guide to Wollongong’s Best Ocean Pools 2024, this is one not to miss! Located at the southern end of Wombarra Beach. You have to come off the main road, and the car park is quite small. These things combine to give it quite a secluded feel. What an absolute beauty .Has a ladder for access in the south west corner, and the steps were pleasantly un-slimy when I exited. There is also a ramp for access in the south east corner.

How big is Wombarra rock Pool?

So big and spacious that I swam around instead of going up and down.

Measuring 45m by 26m at the very longest and widest points, according to Nicole Larkin’s ocean pool mapping project, The Wild Edge.

The kids pool is about 12m by 6m and I’ll measure the depth the next time I get there.

Visiting Wombarra Ocean Pool

There were toilets and cold shower facilities. There is a lovely spot to sit just south of the carpark, featuring brand new-looking picnic tables. Just up the hill, a small children’s park.

I bumped into a lovely lady who complimented me on my swimming technique—and asked me if I was a triathlete. I’m certainly no triathlete, but it was a very nice of her to suggest there was some kind of resemblance.

There are no lifeguards at Wombarra Rock Pool. I didn’t check what the tides were up to on my visit, but the water wasn’t lapping over the edge of the pool. You can walk all the way around the edge on the concrete edges, one of my favourite things to do before I jump in. Very pleasant.

What is the water temperature like at Wombarra Rock Pool?

When I visited in October 2023 Dianne Duck confirmed it was a balmy 24 degrees! It was absolutely beautiful in! My subsequent visit early 2024, the temperature was only 19.7, but still pleasantly refreshing.

Be careful of the oyster shells!

On the natural bottom of the pool there was definitely lots of oyster shells on the rocks. Be careful not to cut your feet if you want to do some walking in the pool rather than swimming. Something to watch out for to keep the kids safe.

How far is Wombarra Rock Pool from Sydney?

Wombarra Rock Pool is definitely worth a trip to check out. Only 65kms from Sydney, an easy drive down the coast.

Is Wombarra Rock Pool Wheelchair and Pram accessible?

Wombarra Ocean Pool is not set up for good wheelchair accessibility with a staircase from the car park to the pool. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet and changeroom. Ramp in the SE corner of the pool. Ladder in SW corner of big pool.

What other ocean pools are nearby?

Super close to it’s northern neighbour- Coalcliff Rock Pool, a short 8 minute drive according to Google Maps, and an even shorter 5 minute drive to it’s southern neighbour, Coledale Rock Pool. You could easily pack a few pools into the same road trip.

If you’ve travelled this far, be sure to head slightly further south and admire the view from the famous Seacliff Bridge. And then if you’re thirsty, I’d highly recommend visiting the Scarborough Hotel for a beer with one of the best views along the entire coast.
