The Blue Pool-Bermagui
Bermagui's Ocean Pool
Bermagui’s Blue Pool first came into my life at a year 10 sleep over. There were ghost stories about a little girl who had died there, and threats of walking down there in the dark. We all chickened out that night and I didn’t visit this beautiful pool for many years, despite living quite close by. My parents weren’t really the outdoors type, and my Mum, at the ripe old age of 78 still doesn’t know how to swim! Relying on them for transport as a teenager meant I missed out on exploring this spot.
30 years later I’m trying to make up for lost time I think. I remember heading to the Blue Pool for a swim when I was in my early twenties. The place seemed like a well kept secret, with no one but my friends and I to enjoy it that day.
Visiting Bermagui Ocean Pool
Fast forward to the summer of 2016 and I thought I’d take the kids and the wife to check out this beautiful spot. It was a pretty hot day some time in the January school holidays. The first clue should have been how busy the car park was. Nonetheless we continued our journey down the stairs, and ignored clue number two- the number of people coming back up and it was only mid morning.
As we got down to the level of the pool there were so many people it was hard to find a space to put down your towel. We watched a seal doing some tricks just off the rocks near the southern end of the big pool. We had a quick snorkel with the kids, where there were quite a few small fish to see.
After that we conceded defeat, knowing that the crowd was way too much for us and that we’d have a better time at the beach in town.
I didn’t realise until I got my wife to take the photos on this page in September 2023, that she never got to see The Blue Pool in all it’s uncrowded beauty. She had still pictured it on the crazy busy day I had taken her all those years ago. “I did think you were going on about it a bit”, she said when she got home, “but, now I get what you meant”.
If you want to experience the Blue Pool at it’s best, try your best not to go on a hot day in the summer school holidays.
