Ocean Pooling from Above

There’s something uniquely magical about looking down on an ocean pool – seeing the ripples, reflections and rock formations stretch into living patterns. For Central Coast photographer Jacqueline Green, that view is where her creativity takes off.

The gear you use has got to play a part, right? With that in mind, I asked Jacqueline what type of drone she uses to capture such beautiful images of my favourite subject matter. “In 2023 I upgraded to the Mavic 3 and I just recently bought the Mini 5 Pro,” Jacqueline tells me. “It’s an amazing little drone and will be great for future travel.”

Those drones have become her creative companions, allowing her to explore the coast from a new perspective. “I’ve always been drawn to the water to take my aerial shots,” she explains. “One of my favourite places to go is rock pools. Each pool is unique. Their shapes from above make fantastic top-down shots.”

I couldn’t agree more, I find bird’s eye view shots of glassy ocean pools quite mesmerising!

Rock Pools and the Rhythm of Water

For Jacqueline and her family, ocean pools appeal to each of them in different ways. “They swim, I fly. Keeps us all happy!” she laughs, referring to their weekend ritual at their favourite local haunts – Pearl Beach, McMasters, Avoca and Terrigal.

Each flight brings something new. “I love the sense of freedom you get flying the drone. I’m not sure what I’ll be capturing until I’m up in the air and something catches my eye,” she says. I think that’s the perfect recipe for success, for as you can clearly see, Jacqui has an eye for beauty!

That spontaneity is what defines her work. “It could be patterns in the sand bars, textured rocks, a row of boats, rock pool angles or a dolphin. You never know what you will catch while flying – and that’s the fun of it!”

Sunrise and the Stillness of Ocean Pools

For Jacqueline, dawn is where it’s at. “My favourite time of the day to shoot would have to be sunrise,” she says. “I love a coloured sky and the reflections on the water. It’s always so peaceful down by the water early before the world wakes up.”

Her images capture that tranquility of the early mornings – glassy pools, gentle surf, and skies brushed with gold. “Golden hour is also a great time to shoot,” she adds. “The morning light isn’t too harsh and it’s great to catch those long shadows.”

It’s this delicate play of light that gives her work its emotional depth. Each photograph captures not just a place, but a moment, each one beautiful and fleeting.

Ocean Pools are The Tidal Treasures of the East Coast

From Newcastle to Sydney and beyond, the East Coast of NSW brims with ocean pools – each one it’s own story carved by tide and time. Jacqueline’s portfolio includes many of our favourites (and Terrigal):

“The East Coast is full of beautiful rock pools,” she says. “I hope to visit as many as I can.” We absolutely love that kind of talk here at Ocean Rock Pools! A stand out favourite discovery for Jacqueline is Forty Baskets Beach at Balgowlah, near Manly. I’d never heard of this one, but will definitely be adding it to my list! The next closest ocean pool to here is Fairlight Beach Rock Pool. So many to discover on Sydney’s north side!

At the top of her wish list to photograph is Aslings Beach Rock Pool in Eden – a location that captures her imagination. “I hope to get there in the near future,” she says. I can’t wait to see her shots from this Southernmost NSW ocean pool. The combination of those pink cliffs, turquoise water, and Jacqueline’s keen eye for composition will be nothing short of spectacular.

The Art of Ocean Pooling

Flying her drone, for Jacqueline, is more than photography – it’s connection and escape at the same time. “I love the sense of freedom you get flying the drone,” she tells me. That sense of liberation and discovery flows through her entire portfolio.

Her photographs remind us that ocean pools are not just swimming spots – they’re natural galleries where light, tide and rock meet in constant conversation. Through her lens she captures the ever-changing motion of the sea, a part of nature not often enough shown the love it deserves.

I always like to ask people if there’s a certain song they think of when they visit their favourite ocean pool. “No, I don’t really think about songs while shooting.” Jacqueline answers. “I’m too busy focusing on the scenery. Music is always an after thought when I display the shots on Instagram. My favourite artist is Lana Del Rey.” I’m not that familiar with Lana’s music, but I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that it would more likely invoke “Lust for life” than “Summertime sadness”.

Thanks again Jacqueline for sharing your beautiful images with us. I’ve got to say I’m pumped for a Central Coast road trip now!!
